Two years have passed since New York State adopted a ban on plastic bags. Yet despite the threat of fines, many stores continue to use them. Top Tomato, located at 420 South Broadway not only continues to use plastic bags but charges customers ten cents per bag if they do not bring their own.
Many store owners have continued to use plastic bags because they’re more convenient than paper bags Paper bags tear easily and present a problem if a grocery item has a wet surface. Paper bags also do not fit items as well as plastic bags. Another consideration is cost. Plastic bags cost a fraction of the price of paper bags.
So if you are nostalgic for fantastic plastic, stop by Top Tomato. But be prepared to pay the price.
