Join The Yonkers Police Cadet Program

Both parents and young teens are anxiously awaiting guidance regarding the 2020 Fall school term. Traditionally, schools are safe havens for both academic, social and special interest pursuits. The current virus pandemic has short circuited those networks and left families in limbo.

The Yonkers Police Department offers a valuable program to fill that gap. The Yonkers Cadet Program has been in existence for several years in the Y.O.

That program provides educational exposure to the Criminal Justice System, with an emphasis on Law Enforcement and modern police practices,  Eligible Yonkers residents must be  between the ages of 14 and 18.

Probationary cadets are given a weekly class in topics covering many different aspects of policing Trips to various Yonkers police facilities are provided and  guest speakers with expertise on subjects pertinent to  law enforcement offer lectures. In addition, cadets are required to maintain a specific grade point average in their respective schools.

Once their training is completed, cadets  attend  public events under direct supervision of their program administrators within the City of Yonkers.

An important component of the program is participation  in community services in connection with Yonkers Police outreach programs. Last year, cadets participated in the annual Ludlow Park Clean Up Event. This not only helps the environment but improves the quality of life for local residents.

The overall concept of the Yonkers Cadet Program teaches the value of higher education, self discipline and respect for diversity. The emphasis on leadership skills and teamwork provides valuable tools in character development.

The positive interaction of Cadets and law enforcement officers helps young adults see officers as mentors and allows greater opportunities to forge partnerships between the Yonkers Police Department and the community.
