Thieves Steal Cars with Apple Air Tag

There's a new scam in town and according to a Yonkers resident, it almost succeeded. The person posted in a local forum as follows:

"I just wanted to report a creepy incident that happened to me last week at Ridge Hill. While my car was parked in one of the parking garages there last Wednesday night someone put an Apple Air Tag on my car. I only knew about it because the Find My Phone app on my iPhone alerted me about 5 minutes after I got into my car that there was an Air Tag near me and to call law enforcement if I felt in danger.

I'd never heard of an Air Tag before but reading that warning scared me! Luckily the phone alert had an arrow to press to Play Sound to locate the Air Tag. My husband and I located it pushed under a plastic piece of the car near the windshield wiper on the passenger side of my car.

I went to my local police station the next day and was told it was most likely someone after the catalytic converter in my car (older model Honda). I've since heard that creepy guys drop them in women's handbags in bars. So be careful out there! Thankful that the app on my phone alerted me to its presence."

According to law enforcement, this is yet another example of how tech savvy thieves are using the digital arena to their advantage. https://driving.ca/auto-news/crashes/clearing-the-airtag-apples-new-gizmo-linked-to-car-thefts

The good news is that law enforcement has partnered with Apple to deter the scheme. https://www.pcmag.com/news/apple-if-you-abuse-airtags-for-stalking-expect-police-to-come-knocking?amp=true
