Saugatuck Offers Sweet Spot for Father's Day

Just a couple of years ago, the stretch of Saugatuck approaching the New York-bound side of the station was an assemblage of ramshackle buildings set in front of an oil tank on the river. Now, it's a destination offering great food and drink, convenient condominium living, and riverfront access for all.

My son and I started our Father's Day morning with a beefy brunch at Saugatuck Craft Butchery---yes there's a cafe in addition to the butcher shop---featuring what he described as the "best burger ever, beating Shake Shack and Five Guys," and a perfectly done steak for me accompanied by an egg nestled in a slice of brioche toast. We sat outside on the lovely patio enjoying the almost-summer morning, with Craft's garden vegetables surrounding us in planters along the edges.

After brunch, we crossed the street and took a walk along the boat slips by the river, admiring the sleek cruisers tied to the dock. Kayakers and stand-up paddlers passed by on the sun-kissed water. Then it was up to Saugatuck Sweets for some ice cream enjoyed on the terrace to the sounds of Frank Sinatra (comforting and familiar to me but not my son's cup of tea).

It was a perfect to way spend any Sunday morning, but an especially nice way to spend Father's Day.
