Westport, CT - As early as the 18th century, the Saugatuck River running through the center of downtown presented a commerce "highway” that encouraged trade and the growth of industry. Wharves and factories lined both shores of the river well into the 20th century and some of those buildings still stand today. Join the Westport Historical Society for a glimpse into Westport’s commercial past on Saturday, May 19 through a walking tour of the town’s Business Center District and discover facts about such historic sites as National Hall and the former Westport Bank & Trust Company building.
The one-hour walk kicks off at 4 p.m. at Jesup Green and will be led by Bob Mitchell, Westport Historical Society Chairperson.“This tour demonstrates how critical the Saugatuck River was to the commercial and economic development of Westport,” says Mitchell.
Journey across the river to view National Hall, a historical building that has housed a variety of businesses since it was built in 1873. It is now listed on the National Register. Back on the east bank you’ll see the site of the old library, former YMCA and the wedge-shaped Westport Bank & Trust company. End with a sweet site at 76 Post Road East, the former Petrie’s Ice Cream Parlor.
