Newton Roux Art Gallery Presents “Dreamweaves” Exhibition in Bedford Square Featuring the work of Amy Kaplan
Newton Roux Gallery is a contemporary art space in Bedford Square in downtown Westport which focuses on contemporary artists and abstract painters. Its next solo exhibit “Dreamweaves” features works by Westport, CT-based artist Amy Kaplan and runs NOW through December 1st, 2021.
The diverse collection features work from two distinct groupings: “Dreamweaves,” which is the title of the show and “Tangled & Twined,” her latest work which was created during Covid.
Dreamweaves are colorful, woven works that when you look more closely you’ll discover are composed of cut strips from palette papers. The artist used these palettes for painting various scenes along the Connecticut shoreline. The strips of paper are woven together into a textile-like remnant and artifact representing impressions of a place.
“I am drawn to the elemental strength of the land, sea and sky; interested in the moments in-between, the beats of time at the apex of the tide change, the blush of day giving way to night, reflections and refractions, layers and depths,” said Kaplan. “In those moments, I feel our physical world integrating life and time into itself. In my work I try to recreate that space, a place of just being, so that I can see.“
Tangled & Twined consists of layers of resists and dyes, waxes and ink layered to express the veils of distance felt by the artist during Covid. Once the paper emerged they were wrapped and finished with thread as if trying to keep tied together during a difficult time.
“The truth is that I was trying pretty hard to keep myself together, and these works are my expression of that time, ” said Kaplan.

Artist’s Biography
Amy Kaplan worked in NYC as a textile designer and colorist for several major home furnishing manufacturers in the first phase of her career. She relocated to Connecticut to raise a family and has been painting in her home studio ever since. Color and pattern played such a large influence in her earlier career and continues to influence her work today. Now unencumbered by "commercial" rules and restrictions she can really “play!”
Kaplan currently resides in Westport, Connecticut but is relocating to Florida at the end of the year.

Newton Roux Gallery, at 14 Elm Street, occupies the 2nd floor corridor connecting Barbour and Whip Salon in the new Bedford Square retail complex in downtown Westport. The entrance is at the top of the stairs across the street from The Spotted Horse.
