Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Oloughlin Associates.

Four questions with Maureen O'Loughlin, founder of Oloughlin Associates.

Why did you start your business?

I started OLOUGHLIN ASSOCIATES after going through some of my struggles as a parent. I had a child with learning challenges that were not being met by the public school. Changing schools completely altered his trajectory, and it was an incredibly positive experience.

I went to work for an organization in Manhattan called Inspiring Young Minds which works with over 100 boarding schools throughout the country. This experience gave me direct exposure to the vast number of programs and services available to students and families. I found myself working with bright student-athletes with significant financial needs seeking excellent educational opportunities. Many of these students were first-generation kids. I once again saw how finding the right fit school can completely change the course of a child’s life.

What is your best-selling product/service?

I formalized OLOUGHLIN ASSOCIATES once parents started coming to me with questions. There are a lot of options out there.  Finding the right fit is rewarding. Whether it is an athlete looking to take their training to the next level, or a student with a learning difference, I enjoy helping parents navigate the landscape of independent school options. I understand first-hand how overwhelming the process can be when you don’t know where to start.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Locally, I worked with MHL to create the content and design of my website, www.oloughlinassociates.com, and for some finance and business consulting. Another local business I support is Custom Pet Services for pet care as I spend a lot of time on the road visiting schools and looking at programs. As I reimage OLOUGHLIN ASSOCIATES, I am hoping to work with someone to develop my social media content and marketing so that I can reach more families.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

Post-COVID, I have focused more of my professional development on finding and understanding programs suitable for the increased need to guide young people who are struggling with anxiety.
