Movies in Westport

We don't have a movie theater (yet?), but you can still have a social movie-going experience, thanks to the Westport Historical Society and the Westport Library.

Tomorrow, Jan. 26, you'll have your pick of these three:

Your Environmental Road Trip” at the Westport Historical Society

First up tomorrow is the documentary that follows Mark Dixon, Ben Evans, and Julie Dingman Evans on a year-long trek across our 50 states—in a used hybrid, of course!—to document and personalize sustainability. In the process, they conducted over 800 interviews and collected close to 600 hours of footage.

Their stated mission was to seek answers to these questions: What can Americans do to save the planet? What are they already doing? Why aren't we all doing more? Is it possible that doing right by the planet is more economical, joyful, and fulfilling than not?”

The screening runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Raymond Room.

Overcoat Film Series: “My Darling Clementine” at the Westport Library

Based on the legendary shoot-out at the O.K. Corral, the 1946 classic western was selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress and stars Henry Fonda, Linda Darnell, and Victor Mature.

Fun facts about the film, courtesy of the IMDb:

  • This was Henry Fonda's first production after returning from U.S. Navy service in World War II.

  • Director John Ford, who in his youth had known the real Wyatt Earp, claimed the way the OK Corral gunfight was staged in this film was the way it was explained to him by Earp himself, with a few exceptions.

  • Vincent Price was considered for the role of Doc Holliday.

The screening runs from 2 to 4 p.m. in the McManus Room.

WestportREADS: “Amelia” at the Westport Library

The 2009 biographical film stars Hilary Swank in the title role. Richard Gere plays her husband and manager, George Putnam. Also featured in the film is Ewan McGregor as Gene Vidal, with whom Earhart is presumed to have had a romantic relationship. Incidentally, Gene Vidal is the father of famed writer Gore Vidal.

The screening runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the McManus Room.
