The Public Library: Not Just For Books (Though We Do Like Books)

I read a charming ode to the public library at Book Riot this morning, “I Haven’t Been to the Library in Almost a Year: A Story of Shame.” This prompted me to think loving thoughts about our Westport Library, it’s knowledgeable and personable staff, great collection, amazing programs, tasty iced coffee and baked goods.

This is my delicate way of asking: you been there lately? Really, it's delightful!

Here are three good reasons (in addition to the five compelling ones listed above) to make the library a destination this weekend:

From the Westport Library:

Saturday, April 14 from 2 – 3:30 p.m. in the McManus Room

Drum Circle

Experience the spirit and energy of a group drum circle! This hands-on program uses ethnic drums and world percussion instruments to take participants on a wondrous rhythmic journey. No musical experience is necessary, and instruments instruments will be provided.

Registration is required, as space is limited. For middle school and up.

Sunday, April 15

The Usual Suspects: Bloodhounds

From 2 – 3 p.m. in the Seminar Room, the library’s mystery reading group will discuss “Bloodhounds” by Peter Lovesey. Assigned to investigate the loss of a priceless stamp from a local museum, detective Peter Diamond of the Bath police department soon stumbles upon a homicide linked to the theft. The victim belongs to an elite group of mystery lovers called the Bloodhounds. A "locked room'' mystery.

New participants are always welcome.

Nimbus Ensemble

The Nimbus Ensemble will perform from 2 – 3 p.m. in the McManus Room. The woodwind octet is composed of musicians from local symphony orchestras, organized by Norwalk Symphony bassoonist Dr. Richard Epstein. This combination of woodwinds (two each of oboes, clarinets, French horns, and bassoons) is rarely heard in concert. Beethoven’s glorious "Octet in E flat Major, Opus 103," will be the performance centerpiece, along with a mix of lighter fare representing diverse musical styles and periods.
