The Interfaith Council of Westport and Weston continues its series of contemporary issues programs with a presentation by Westport resident and Islamic scholar, Sarah Tunney entitled “The Role of Women in Islamic History.”
The program will begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 10 in the Community Room at Saint Luke Church (49 Turkey Hill Rd. N in Westport). Following the program, we will gather for conversation and refreshments. There is no charge.
This presentation will offer some historical perspective to this hot topic.
What is the "place" of the woman in Islam? How have women's roles and rights in Islamic and Muslim societies changed from the early days of the faith to today, if at all?
Sarah Tunney, Ph.D (ABD) earned her Bachelor of Arts in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Yale University, graduating cum laude in 1998. She continued on as a doctoral candidate at New York University, where her primary fields of study were Islamic law and theology, Arabic philosophy, and science, as well as social history. In the pursuit of her doctorate, Tunney traveled extensively in the Middle East and gained proficiency in eight languages, building the foundation of her expertise and knowledge from primary medieval Arabic sources.
