Once again it’s Super Bowl time. And for the seventh year, Westport Sunrise Rotary will be at Westport’s Stop & Shop on Post Road East the day before — Saturday, February 2, from 8:00 to 6:00 — encouraging you to donate to the Food Pantry at Homes With Hope’s Gillespie Center.
The items you donate restock the Food Pantry’s shelves, for today, for this month and for much of the year. And yes, we have people who are food insecure, who rely on the kindness of others to provide or supplement what they purchase themselves.
And while the need is always present, this year it is even greater. As we learn from news reports, federal government employees are going unpaid and SNAP recipients, low-income people eligible for the Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program, may soon lose their most basic benefit.
So while you’re shopping for your Super Bowl party, please take a couple of extra minutes, add a can or few of soup or vegetables, a few rolls of paper towels or a bagful of another non-perishable food to your cart. It will be greatly appreciated.
“Rotary’s motto is ‘Service Above Self.’ This is a great example, especially on a cold day in February! Thanks from Homes with Hope and all the area’s neediest residents who benefit from this Food Drive.”
Rob Hauck, Co-Chair of the club’s Hands-On Committee, added “Sunrise Rotary has been a long time supporter of Homes With Hope, and, with continued community support, we look forward to making the food drive even more successful this year.”
