Bridgeport Rescue Mission Prepares for Increased Numbers at Their Food Pantry This Week

Four days a week at their Main campus on Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport Rescue Mission’s Food Pantry bustles with activity as they distribute non-perishable items and fresh produce to food-insecure individuals and families.   On average, the Mission serves 40-50 guests each week providing staples such as rice, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned tuna along with an assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables.   This past Friday, the Mission served approximately 75 families and expects to serve equal numbers each day in the week ahead.

In anticipation of a government shut-down, February’s food stamps were distributed in late January.  Recipients were cautioned to be careful to budget their supply because the next distribution of stamps is not scheduled until March 1st.    Many of those coming to the Mission’s Food Pantry this past week had run out of food stamps.

Executive Director, Terry Wilcox, has instructed his staff to open the Pantry on Wednesday this week to address the increased demand for food.  Regular pantry hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 2:00  pm through 3:30 pm and adding an additional day in response to higher than usual need in the community will mean more families can receive the groceries they need in order to prepare nutritious meals.

If you want to help, please bring food donations to the Donation Center at 1069 Connecticut Avenue, Bridgeport Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 am through 5:00 pm or make a gift online at BridgeportRescueMission.org.
