In 1927, Barracoon author Zora Neale Hurston traveled to Plateau, Alabama, to visit eighty-six-year-old Cudjo Lewis, a survivor of the Clotilda, the last slaver known to have made the transatlantic journey well after the formal end of the legal slave trade. Captured and brought to the United States, Mr. Lewis was enslaved for fifty years. At the time, Mr. Lewis was the only person alive who could recount this integral part of the nation’s history.
Join Barracoon’s publisher Tracy Sherrod for a lively discussion of the journey Hurston undertook, her struggles to publish her unique work and Sherrod’s own work with Amistad, the multicultural imprint of Harper Collins publisher. Copies of the book will be available for sale after the discussion.
