Heather Frimmer writes what she knows. A Westonite and seasoned radiologist, Frimmer has written Bedside Manners (SparkPress, October 2018), her debut novel to be celebrated at a book launch on Sunday, October 21 at 2:00 pm at Barnes and Noble, 1076 Post Road, Westport. The author will share a short excerpt and be interviewed by award-winning Westport News columnist, Judith Marks-White, who has also penned Bachelor Degree and Seducing Harry: An Epicurean Affair. A book signing will follow.
Frimmer hails from Albany, New York, is a Brandeis and Cornell graduate, and completed her fellowship at Yale. After a dozen years at Norwalk Radiology, she’s left her post as Director and joined Main Street Radiology in Queens, New York as a breast imager. She relished writing short stories in high school, holds an English minor, and is an established book reviewer for Books, Ink at Hamlet Hub. With two decades of experience and a wealth of insight about women’s health combined with her penchant for the written word, Frimmer enrolled in classes at Westport Writers’ Workshop, where Bedside Manners was born.

Bedside Manners is a mother-daughter tale told from two perspectives, with alternating chapters. Marnie is a medical school graduate, interning and planning her upcoming nuptials; Joyce is her mother who has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. And so ensues a story of how Marnie must balance her identity as a doctor and supportive daughter, while Joyce endures treatment, distracted only by wedding plans. Amid their soul-searching, both Joyce and Marnie’s futures change in unexpected ways.
“This book captures the anxiety and fear I see in all of my patients with breast cancer. The alternating storyline highlights the struggles of medical training and learning to be a good doctor. I didn’t want this book to end,” said Dr. Richie Zelkowitz, Medical Oncologist, Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital.
