Fridays are for fascinating forums! Join us on May 15th from 5 to 5:30 pm for a Live Author Talk on Zoom with author, Elizabeth J. Normen who will discuss her illustrated children’s book, Venture Smith’s Colonial Connecticut: A True Story of Freedom, the remarkable story of a man enslaved in Africa and sold in Connecticut for some rum and calico cloth but who went on, over the course of his life, to buy his own freedom, that of his wife and children and others. Normen will chat about her research, themes of the book and take questions from viewers.

Elizabeth Normen is publisher of Connecticut Explored, the magazine of Connecticut history and two books for students: Where I Live: Connecticut for grades 3-4 and Venture Smith’s Colonial Connecticut for grades 5 – 8. She co-edited African American Connecticut Explored, a book of 50 essays by 30 scholars about 400 years of African American history in Connecticut published by Wesleyan University Press in 2014. She also contributes to Grating the Nutmeg, the podcast of Connecticut history.
