Cedar Point Yacht Club Hosts Largest-ever OneDesign Regatta

Cedar Point Yacht Club hosted its largest-ever OneDesign Regatta this weekend, as a record 106 boats and 560 sailors competed in eight classes of sailboats, including four classes that competed for national or regional championships.

Fickle breezes and constantly changing seas created challenges on Saturday, as sailors worked through periods of dead calm followed by a thunderstorm that roared across Long Island Sound from the north. On Sunday, brisk winds across the circle courses southeast of Compo Beach made for more favorable conditions, and more races were completed.

The classes were J30, J109, J70, Thistle, J105, J88, Beneteau First 36.7, and Atlantic:

  • J30s – North America Championship: Russ Atkinson, of Rockwood, MI won the title, taking three firsts among eight races completed over the weekend.
  • J109s – East Coast Championship: David Rosow of Southport crushed the competition by winning all six races, repeating his East Coast win in 2017.
  • J70s – Long Island Sound Championship: Brian Keane of Weston, MA, won the Long Island Sound title by finishing first in three out of five races.
  • Thistles – Long Island Sound / New Jersey Championship Series: David Dellenbaugh of Easton, CT, won the one race completed by this class, coming in first of 34 boats, the largest fleet in the regatta. CPYC will be host to the Thistle National Championships this July 28 through August 4. The Thistle Class last held its National Championship at CPYC in 2009, when Dellenbaugh was crowned National Champion for the seventh time.
  • J105s – Joseph Scarpulla of Huntington, NY, finished first twice of five races to win in the 2m J105 class.
  • J88s: Mike Bruno of Armonk, NY, was first in three of five races to win the class.
  • Beneteau First 36.7: Peter Hurley of West Harrison, NY, was also first in three of five races to win his class.
  • Atlantics: Rodrigo Meireles of Norwalk, CT narrowly defeated perennial CPYC Atlantics favorite Scott Reichhelm of Westport, CT taking first in three of five races versus Scott’s two. Jim Doyle of Easton, CT came in third. CPYC has had a powerhouse fleet of Atlantics dating to the 1950s.

Corinthian Honors: CPYC encourages amateur sailors and gives a special Corinthian Team honor to those who race non-professionally. Six of the J70 teams qualified as Corinthian, and the winners were Andrew and Melissa Fisher of Greenwich. CPYC member Trevor Roach of Darien came in third.

“We were delighted to host so many sailors from all over the United States for this weekend of friendly yet fierce competition,” said John Cooke, CPYC OneDesign Regatta Chairman. “Our some 100 club volunteers worked tirelessly to prepare for this event, and it was gratifying to see it all come together, and with four championships awarded.”
