Keepin' it BLONDE: 5 Minutes with Suzanne, Head Colorist from Whip Salon

How to Keep Your Blonde Lookin' Bomb 5 Minutes with Suzanne, Head Colorist from Whip Salon

It's that time of year when everyone flocks to the salon to brighten up and lighten up their locks. Blondes getting blonder, brunettes getting bronder you can set your watch to it. But what do you do to keep your hair looking amazing after you splurge on highlights? We sat down with the head of the Whip Salon color department, Suzanne Baumann to pass along some wisdom for just that. She has more than 30 years of experience and blondes are Suzanne's passion and specialty.

What are the hair color trends this spring that clients have been asking you for the most?

Clients are heavily influenced by Instagram and Facebook these days! Clients often times will bring in something they've seen and ask us to color match and even refer to our own work that either myself or my colleagues at Whip Salon have done which we feature on instagram @whipsalon. In terms of color trends, there's a real gravitation towards the natural look. I'm getting less requests for platinum or silver, but instead yummy honey and natural blondes. This really ties in to the dewy, natural makeup trends that are also cropping up this spring

Why can finding the right colorist actually save you money?

Well getting the right shade of blonde isn't that simple, so if you want to nail a certain look, make sure you go to someone who knows what they are doing. It's crazy to me that people will use box color that can strip your hair horribly, then come to a salon and ask us to layer on top of that, you may be trying to save money but it can result in being more expensive because you'll need a color correction which is a longer process and can damage your hair. Find a colorist you click with and that you're confident that they know what they are doing.

What can clients do to keep their blonde lookin' bomb?

It may seem counter-intuitive but staying out of the sun is a biggie. You may think it is going to just improve your blonde (we then to think blondes=sun) but actually, it is quite damaging. Consider wearing a hat if you're in the sun for extended periods of time to protect your color. Ask your stylist next time you're in to give you some tips too, we always have plenty of ideas. Use your time in the chair to ask the experts all your hair questions, after all it's a perk of coming to the salon!

What products do you recommend for aftercare?

It's really important to use the right products to protect the investment you've just made in your hair. It makes a huge difference to maintain your color, I can't stress that enough. Products with purple and blue pigments are designed to stave off brassiness. I recommend Whip Salon's "Follow Back" violet Toning Platinum Shampoo and Conditioner.
