Research shows - kids need to move after school! Westport Continuing Education offers lots of choices for K-8

Westport / CT - Research shows - and parents know - that most kids need lots of physical activity! “Research shows that when we exercise, blood pressure and blood flow increase everywhere in the body, including the brain,” says neuroscientist Justin Rhodes in a 2013 Scientific American column. “More blood means more energy and oxygen, which makes our brain perform better.” What better place to get active than after school? Westport Continuing Education (WCE) offers the variety that kids love. Most programs begin the week of January 27. Online registration is now open on the WCE website at www.westportcontinuinged.com

From Badminton to Taekwondo, all five elementary schools in Westport have a great selection of fitness and sports programs for grades K-5. There’s still time to sign up for PM/PE at Greens Farms (GFS) and Kings Highway (KHS) schools. Led by teachers in the Westport Public Schools, kids get a chance to participate in all of their favorite Phys Ed games and the benefits of active play, games, coordination and movement. These activities also benefit a child’s social, emotional and intellectual development. PM/PE + Homework, offered at KHS and Saugatuck (SES) has the added benefit for kids to get some homework done, too! Karate classes are presented by Kempo Academy Evolution of Westport, committed to incorporating mindfulness and focus in their classes at CES, KHS, Long Lots (LLS) and SES. Another form of martial arts is led by World Champion Taekwondo at KHS and SES. Taekwondo offers physical and mental benefits: increased strength, cardio endurance, and flexibility, plus greater mental focus and confidence that can expand into all areas of life. Overtime Athletics (OTA) finishes the school day with Sports Variety, practicing skills and playing sports, games and playground favorites, offered at CES, GFS and SES. Everything is better on wheels! In the spring OTA is offering Scooter Dash at GFS and SES.

For middle school students, Body Blast offers strength and conditioning for student-athletes at Bedford Middle School (BMS). Overtime Athletics also offers GOtime (Game Play and Scrimmaging) at BMS. These organized games are a great way to test new skills and get more comfortable in your game.
