High school students looking to get ahead this summer have dozens of online courses to choose from through Westport Continuing Education (WCE). Classes are open to all high school students in Connecticut and are designed to give students the tools and resources to be successful in high school and college. Online classes for credit begin on Monday, June 29. Other courses are held weekly throughout the summer, including College Essay courses, Gear Up & Get Ahead. WCE programs are open to anyone outside of Westport, at no additional charge. More information, dates, times, and online registration is available on the Westport Continuing Education website here.

High School Credit classes begin on Monday, June 29 and include Chemistry, Physics, Geometry, American Government, Personal Finance Management, and Physical Education. All courses for high school credit are taught by certified teachers from Westport Public Schools. Some students take these courses to further explore their interests, or to qualify to take more advanced courses during the school year. Students also enjoy learning in smaller groups and spending more time in their favorite subject area. The deadline to apply is Friday, June 12. Students can register online here >>

Courses designed to help students with the daunting College Essay include College Essay Boot Camp, led by Westport Public School teachers Mary Katherine Hocking and Jamie Pacuk. This boot camp doesn’t guarantee admission into any college, but we do guarantee that you’ll leave with a compelling essay, feeling more confident about the admissions process and the requirements. Jennifer Hinkle, a former magazine editor and Brown University graduate, has spent over a decade helping students take the sting out of the writing process. She leads College Essay Workshop classes that include group discussions on how to craft an essay that reveals the person behind the grades and test scores. This class also features one-on-one meetings with the instructor, built into the class time. Sacred Heart University professor Sheryl Kane has the goal of encouraging students to gain confidence in their own writing and speaking abilities while creating a compelling essay in the College Essay Seminar course. Kayne is also teaching Professional Writing & Public Speaking. This workshop gives students simple exercises to incorporate during the junior and/or senior years of high school in order to prepare for college level reading, writing, and speaking. Learn to hone your “elevator pitch,” be confident and assured!

Gear Up & Get Ahead courses are designed for high school students who will benefit from additional tools and resources to be successful in school. Students may choose Grammar & Writing Review, or for those entering high school in the fall, Step Up to High School Spanish. Westport Public Schools’ teachers provide valuable resources for students to reach their full potential in the courses Gear Up for AP Calculus or Gear Up for American Government
