Westport Police Department Promotes Breast Cancer Awareness in October

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a chance to promote education as well as raise awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection of the disease.  As in years past, the Westport Police Department is once again proud to do its part to support this vital cause.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States.  While one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, it is treatable if detected early.  In the words of Chief Foti Koskinas, “We can all help to make a difference in this fight.  Ask someone you love to get a mammogram, and encourage your family, friends, community and local organizations to spread the word.”

Earlier today, Chief Koskinas and the Westport Police Department in conjunction with Maserati of Westport, located at 1026 Post Road East, unveiled a pink and white police decaled 2020 Maserati in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  The ornate decal work was generously donated by Fleet Auto Supply of West Haven.  This donated vehicle will not be used for patrol purposes but will be visible in town for the month of October to show support for this national awareness campaign. It will also be making appearances at a number of Breast Cancer Awareness sponsored events throughout the month.

The department would like to extend our sincerest thanks to Fleet Auto Supply and Maserati of Westport for their continued generosity and unwavering support of this extremely important cause.

The Westport Police Department is also once again proud to be a member of the Pink Patch Project in further support of this initiative.  Our pink uniform patches are part of an innovative campaign comprised of numerous partner agencies throughout the world, including law enforcement organizations, fire departments and emergency medical service workers.  The patches are designed to bring attention to the fight against breast cancer and to support breast cancer research organizations in combating this devastating disease.

For those unfamiliar, the program centers on vibrant pink versions of the public safety employees’ uniform patch. These bright pink patches have been specially designed by each participating agency specifically for their Pink Patch Project participation. Public safety employees at each of the participating agencies wear their pink patches on their regular duty uniforms each year for the entire month of October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Westport officers are also authorized to wear a pink ribbon pin on their duty uniform in further support of the cause.
