Westport Parks & Recreation Department Youth Basketball League Canceled Due to COVID-19

Parks and Recreation Director Jennifer Fava announced today that at this time, the Westport Parks and Recreation Department will not be holding its indoor youth basketball league this year due to COVID-19.

“This is a very popular program that typically provides more than 1,000 of our youth an important recreational experience.  However, in light of the current situation, the prudent thing for us to do is to follow the recommendations of the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) which categorizes indoor basketball as moderate risk and suggests no team play.  Additionally, we currently do not have access to the school facilities which are used for this program, and we do not know if or when they may become available for use by programs such as this,” Fava stated.

“We understand this may be disappointing for some, but we must put the health and safety of our youth, and the community as a whole above all else.  With the current rise in cases, events moving inside for the winter months and several upcoming holidays, there is uncertainty about what lies ahead.  Adding a basketball league is an additional risk we feel should not be taken at this time,” Fava said.

Fava also stated, “We are currently looking into alternative basketball programming opportunities and will re-evaluate the possibility of offering some indoor basketball programming if there are changes to the CT DPH recommendations, and if the school facilities become available for our use.”
