Westport Halloween Update, Compo Beach Parking Lot Closed, Trick or Treaters Encouraged to Stay in their own Neighborhood

Halloween Update

According to State data on COVID-19 cases by community, both Fairfield and Norwalk are now considered “red” communities with a 15 or more COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents.  Westport, fortunately, remains grey with less than 5 cases per 100,000, but we must continue to remain vigilant in our battle against the virus.

]In an effort to protect the health and safety of Westport residents and keep our schools open, Compo Beach will be closed to parking at 3 PM on Halloween as part of our effort to discourage crowds in the Compo Beach neighborhood.  Parents are encourged to keep all trick-or-treaters in their own neighborhoods and are strongly discouraged from allowing trick-or-treating in areas that draw a crowd. Parking at Compo Beach after 3 PM will only be made available for Compo Marina slip holders.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) considers traditional trick-or-treating to be a high-risk activity and should be avoided. Rather, it recommends alternatives for celebrating the holiday with lower risk activities and small events that allow for reduced exposure and ease of contact tracing.

The following Halloween activities are taking place in Westport this weekend:

  • Westport Weston Chamber of Commerce Halloween Window Painting Contest:Please join the annual Halloween Window Painting Contest on Saturday October 24th between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Kids will paint a window and a winner will be selected for each Westport public school.Sign up and register under the events tab at www.westportwestonchamber.com.
  • Downtown Merchants Association Family Pumpkin Fest: This Sunday, October 25, from 12-5:30 PM. wear your costumes and decorate pumpkins on Main Street in a safe and spacious way. You must have a reservation to participate. Go to www.westportdma.com/Halloween-pumpkinfest for info and to sign up.

To register and for more information, visit the Parks and Recreation page at https://www.westportct.gov/government/departments-a-z/parks-and-recreation

If you decide to participate in trick-or-treating on October 31, it is strongly recommended that it be done with increased precautions. A surgical mask must be worn.  The CDC advises against wearing decorative masks over surgical masks. Trick or treaters should be aware that if a home is darkened, it is likely not partaking in Halloween festivities and that decision should be respected. Limit the amount of homes visited.

Please follow the guidelines issued by the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding Halloween this year.

Westport First Selectman Marpe noted, “Halloween is a special holiday for many of our children and families. I am urging residents to be considerate and judicious in how they plan to partake in seasonal activities. It is incumbent upon all of us to insure a safe and healthy Halloween and upcoming holiday season.”
