Creativity Connects Westport: Meet Dan Woog, Staples High School Soccer Coach, Blogger

Creativity Connects Westport

What fuels a vibrant, connected and creative community? What makes people feel good about living in Westport?

When locals share the creativity that they uncover in the nooks and crannies of their community it brings about connectivity and makes us all feel good. Believe it or not, you discover creativity every day as you walk, shop, work, and play in Westport?

Creativity connects us.

Meet Dan Woog, "06880" blogger, Staples High School boys varsity soccer coach, LGBTQ advocate.

Tell us about an organization in your town that makes you feel good

There are so many! This is a town of active, involved people, in so many ways. But if I have to single one out, it would be Staples High School. In all 4 "A"s -- academics, arts, athletics, activities -- there is so much going on, it's astounding. From the extraordinarily qualified staff, to the total commitment to every student, to the involvement of the greater Westport community, Staples rocks the universe.

Where do you go for inspiration and creativity?

At the risk of sounding cliche-ish: The beach. Between Compo and Old Mill (and I mean "between" literally -- the walk is fantastic), this is where I do some of my best thinking. It's beautiful, I see so many people, but I can also be alone with my thoughts. It's very different in every season, but it's always beautiful.

What do you love about your community?

The people. This is a lively town, filled with committed, creative, involved, caring, fun men and women (and kids). Whether they've been here their entire lives, or just arrived during the pandemic, Westport brings out the best in everyone.

From A Better Chance (providing a home and education for teenagers from underserved communities) to Staples High School Tuition Grants (which annually provides more than $300,000 in college scholarships to students in need), and beyond its borders to work with worthy organizations like Mercy Learning Center, Neighborhood Studios and countless others, Westporters walk the talk.

As the boys' varsity soccer coach, I’m honored that our players – and those on so many other athletic teams, in the arts and elsewhere in the school – mentor younger students, march for important causes, deliver groceries, shovel snow, and do whatever they can to show that they appreciate all they’ve been given, and want to give back.
