Creativity Connects Westport: Meet Mary Hamilton, Local Creative and Founder of Art for Therapy

Creativity Connects Westport

What fuels a vibrant, connected and creative community? What makes people feel good about living in Westport?

When locals share the creativity that they uncover in the nooks and crannies of their community it brings about connectivity and makes us all feel good. Believe it or not, you discover creativity every day as you walk, shop, work, and play in Westport?

Creativity connects us.

Meet Mary Hamilton, art therapist, and founder of child and adolescent therapy practice Art for Therapy, LLC.

Is there an organization in town that makes you feel good?

It makes me feel good to witness my clients achieve improved moods, self-esteem and increased daily levels of functioning using Art Therapy. Art Therapy is a psychotherapeutic practice that uses the creative art process as a pathway for healing and growth. It is used for the mental health treatment of children and adolescents who experience anxiety, depression, family adjustments, developmental delays, and trauma and loss. Through Art Therapy, insight is gained to connect behaviors with emotions. The process of Art Therapy repairs inner conflicts and develops empowerment from bringing order to chaos.

Where do you go for inspiration and creativity?

For inspiration and creativity, I step out onto my office waterfront patio along the Saugatuck River. The area of Saugatuck is an essential backdrop to the creative healing that my art therapy practice provides. The features of the Saugatuck River envelope traditional New England features as well as the serenity and calm essential for healing.

What do you love about your community?

The artistic community vibe is motivational! I love the seasonal spectacle designs of the Saugatuck River Bridge and Cribari Bridge. Westport’s mass flag display and Christmas lighting provide wonder and awe year after year!
