Westport Human Services Seeks Community Support for Children's Back-to-School and Afterschool Needs

Human Services Family Program Coordinator Annette D'Augelli announced today that the Department is seeking community support for children's back-to-school and afterschool needs.

Ms. D'Augelli said, "Westport's Annual Back-to-School Program offers crucial assistance to local families who lack the financial means to purchase back-to-school supplies and access reliable afterschool childcare for their children."

Last year, Westport Human Services helped 115 children from 70 families with back-to-school needs; And provided 15 children with financial assistance to participate in afterschool care programs while their parents were at work.

Human Services relies on the generosity of neighbors whose contributions directly benefit income-eligible families. Walmart gift cards allow families to shop for the essentials, while additional monetary donations provide invaluable access to afterschool programs for kids.

"Many Westport families must choose between paying for groceries, the utility bill, or purchasing back-to-school supplies. Unfortunately, rising prices from gas to food and utilities further contribute to food insecurity and limit access to childcare opportunities for working parents."

D'Augelli continues, "Tax-deductible donations, in the form of cash or gift cards (Walmart), will ensure that children have back-to-school supplies and opportunities to play, explore and grow through extra-curricular activities. 100% of all donations benefit families directly."

Westport Human Services' donation portal is called "We Care Westport." Donations are accepted online at www.westportct.gov/donate click on "Family to Family Programs - Seasonal Program – Back to School." Contributions are also received by mail with checks payable to the "Town of Westport/DHS Family Programs" at 110 Myrtle Ave Westport, CT  06880.

If you or someone you know requires assistance, please call 203-341-1050 or email humansrv@westportct.gov to speak confidentially with a social worker who will help connect income-eligible households with local, state, and federal assistance programs.
