Westport Human Services Seeks Community Support for Children's Back-to-School and Afterschool Childcare Programs

Human Services Director Elaine Daignault announced the department's Annual Back-to-School and Afterschool Childcare Campaign to support income-eligible families in preparation for the 2023-2024 school year.

Ms. Daignault stated, “The campaign serves as a reminder that many local families struggle to afford basic school supplies, new clothing, and, in some cases, reliable afterschool care for their children throughout the school year. The rising costs of goods and services continue to increase. At the same time, many working families struggle to meet the financial demands of providing food, covering housing costs, affording childcare, and purchasing clothes and shoes for their growing children.”

Human Services’ Family Programs help qualifying households purchase school essentials and may also help secure reliable and enriching afterschool care for working families to enhance self-sufficiency.

Daignault continued, "In addition to giving kids the tools for success in school, we recognize the importance of safe and nurturing environments for children outside school hours. Children involved in after-school programs with their peers feel more connected to the community and perform better in school. While reliable childcare allows parents to focus on their jobs with peace of mind, knowing their children are well cared for and engaged in enriching activities."

Human Services relies on the community's generosity to help lower-income families positively launch into a new school year. Tax-deductible donations of any amount will directly and positively impact the lives of local children and families. No contribution is too small; every dollar counts in our efforts to support our families in need. Together, we can foster an environment where every student has the tools to thrive academically and achieve their full potential.
