Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT The Inn at Longshore!

Why did you start your business?

In 1984 my wife and I owned a restaurant called “Tagert’s” in NYC on 49th & 50th. We were approached by Westport Bank and Trust who was searching for a great operator to take the business over. We wanted to move out of NYC and raise our children in Connecticut and fell in love with the building and knew we could create a great life for our family here. 35 years later, Longshore is considered one of the top venues in Connecticut.

Finish this sentence in regard to your business: “I wish I could…”

I wish I knew now what I knew then…yes, this sound cliché but I have such an incredible partnership now with OntheMarc and our culinary program is exceptional. While we knew the catering and food industry and had a very successful business over the years, partnering with an excellent chef like Marc Weber and improving our culinary program has just grown our business and created a buzz in the industry. Our reputation for our food has impressed thousands of guests. We are excited to continue this trend.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products or services) and can you name them?

We refer and use so many vendors from our bakery referrals, photography, local food purveyors, local oil companies, local hotels, electric, food trucks, gift shops, printers, dress shops, invitation shops, local restaurants for rehearsal dinners/breakfasts, floral designers, design companies, event-planners, car dealerships, limo companies, Justice of the Peace, lighting, DJ, bands, Steel Drums, linen companies, rental companies and the list goes on and on.

What is our best selling product/service?

Excellent food, exceptional service, and of course….location. We offer events from galas, proms, weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, corporate holiday parties, corporate meetings/outings, winter/spring/summer/fall events each have their own personality.

How many full-time employees do you employ?

42 Employees with VERY LITTLE TURNOVER. Many employees have been employed here for a long time.
