Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT The Toy Post!

Three questions with Nathan Shapiro, owner of The Toy Post.

Why did you start your business?

I opened the Toy Post because I wanted to start a small business where parents, grandparents and of course kids could have an enjoyable shopping experience, where they could have a great choice of high-quality toys and books.

I was inspired by my family’s history of small business ownership. My great-grandfather, Nathan Fingeroff, (who I’m named after) owned a bookstore in Brooklyn during the Great Depression. His and my great-grandmother’s determination, optimism, and hands-on approach were the reasons that store endured for many years, despite the odds.

What is your best selling product/service?

One of our bestselling categories is plush toys, such as Jellycat.  We love all our plush animals, but these cute, quirky and extra soft toys from England are a big favorite with our customers.  Other bestsellers include LEGO, of course, and for a toy store, we also have an unusually extensive selection of children’s books in our book nook.  Baby and toddler toys are a big category for us, including classic toys as well as more unique items. At the same time, we offer a great selection of toys for older kids.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

One of the fun things we do at The Toy Post is to promote toys and books by local toy inventors and authors.  These are always new and changing, but we are lucky to have an actual toy factory in nearby Danbury, Luke’s Toy Factory.  We are honored to carry books by local author, Carlin Gray.  And Carma Games is located right here in Westport, makers of bestselling games, including Tenzi and Slapzi.
