Editor's note: Friday inspiration: thanks to Westport resident, author and storyteller, Tom Fiffer for capturing this image taken from Longshore Club Park.
Formerly a private country club, Longshore was purchased in 1960 by a prescient town government that saw the value in opening this stunning resource to the public.
The island in the distance is Cockenoe (pronounced cah-keenie), which was once considered as the site for a nuclear power plant, but the town purchased it to block those plans forever.
It takes about an hour to kayak to the island from the sailing school that will rent you a boat, and scouts take overnight camping trips there.
Thanks to the town thinking ahead, everyone can enjoy these beautiful places.
