Why Small Businesses Matter Reimagined

Small businesses matter - now more than ever. They are answering the call with innovation and determination like never before.

We hope you join us in supporting them by sharing their story far and wide and shopping local! We are thankful to Fairfield County Bank for their continued support and making this series possible.

Four questions with Kim Higgins, founder of Eye For Beauty.

What do you want the community to know? Are there ways for the community to help you and other local businesses to prosper?

It feels good seeing businesses start to reopen and create a sense of normalcy. While hair salons received the go-ahead to reopen, there are actually quite a few beauty businesses that still aren’t allowed to perform their regular services during phase two. Those that offer facials, peels, and full-face makeup applications can’t work on clients without them wearing a mask the entire duration of their service. Support your local beauty business by writing a kind review, booking a session for a later time, and just sharing something they posted on social media.

Are you offering any new products or ways for customers to purchase your products or services that are popular during this crisis?

During this time we’ve had to get creative. In phase two, personal services were allowed to operate with certain restrictions. While a full face makeup application currently isn’t allowed, we’ve offered virtual makeup sessions to our clients. Who wouldn’t benefit from a makeup lesson?! It’s actually been a great opportunity for clients to learn how to apply makeup for their photo-shoot, zoom call meetings, or to learn about skincare in a new way.

Those that prefer a more hands-on approach, can still have us apply makeup from the eyes up. We’ve increased our sanitation measures, took this time to get more certifications, and are excited to be slowly reopening safely. Those that want a partial application, will receive a beauty blender, applicators, and additional product to apply themselves.

Are there certain individuals or organizations that supported you and your business through this trying time?

We are a company that loves connecting, and I finally decided to create a “Weekly Wedding Series” interviewing local businesses virtually, mainly in the wedding industry, during Instagram lives. It’s a great way to support each other and be there without “being there”. Noteworthy Chocolates offers custom engraved chocolate with a personal message; perfect to send to grandparents in a nursing home when visiting was too risky. Par la Mer photography chatted to us about intimate elopements and micro weddings. We support each other any way we can.

Please share the ways your business is adapting to keep your customers and employees safe in addition to the standard guidelines

Communication has been key to informing our clients about the guidelines. Currently, we have individual plastic bags for each client receiving a partial makeup application. Each bag has a palette, spatula, eye brushes, sponge, and mask that will be used during each application. Extra products can be placed into pods with single-use applicators to be given to the client. For those who prefer a hands-off approach, our virtual sessions have been very helpful in learning new techniques and product recommendations. We strive to continue to help our clients feel their best.
