Staples Summer Academy offers Summer Programs for High School Students

Westport Continuing Education has expanded summer programs for high school students with the Staples Summer Academy. Summer offerings include High School Credit Courses, College Essay Workshops, Gear Up for AP classes, Grammar and Writing, Biotechnology Careers, Driver Education, and SAT / ACT prep.

Teens can get ahead academically this summer by taking a High School Credit Course in Chemistry, Physics, Geometry, U.S. Government or Physical Education. Classes take place at Staples High School, unless noted otherwise, and taught by certified teachers. Two “Gear Up” classes will help prepare students for AP courses in Algebra and Social Studies. College-ready skills are emphasized in the Grammar and Writing Review class to help improve your written fluency, clarity and power through punctuation and grammar fundamentals.

The popular College Essay Boot Camp will be held online this summer with Staples High School teachers Mary Katherine Hocking and Jamie Pacuk. In this course, get tips for admission interviews from a top-tier college interviewer. New instructor Jennifer Schonbrunn Hinkle presents the College Essay Workshop in person at Staples High School. Hinkle, a former magazine editor and Brown University graduate, has spent over a decade helping students take the sting out of the writing process. In the College Essay Seminar course, Sheryl Kayne, Adjunct Professor at Sacred Heart University, has the goal of encouraging students to gain confidence in their own writing and speaking abilities while creating a compelling essay.

Biotechnology: Innovative Careers is a new class for students with an interest in chemistry, biology and physics to learn more about the potential career paths that are open (and in high demand) for students in these fields. Students engage in readings, group work and research to discover real-life examples of biotech careers, taught by Steven Delco. Delco has worked in the life sciences industry for over 30 years as an educator, scientist, securities analyst, hedge fund manager, and CEO. Recognized internationally as a thought leader at the intersection of biotechnology and finance, he has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg Online, Reuters and is a regular contributor to Forbes.com. Currently he is the President and CEO of Delco Advisors LLC and President of Survive Cancer, Inc.

Driver Education continues with online courses that begin on a regular basis with The Next Street. Plan ahead! Private driving lessons book 3 months in advance. Go to thenextstreet.com/staples and choose the upcoming class that works with your schedule!
