Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Fit by Tash!

Four questions with Natasha Holmes, founder of Fit by Tash.

Why did you start your business?

I started Fit by Tash to help busy professionals and moms get stronger, leaner, and feel better, with the minimal effective dose of exercise. I started my career working 9 to 5 for an investment bank, so it’s really rewarding for me to now work with driven and ambitious corporate clients and optimize the time they spend working out.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Semi-private group training has gained a lot of popularity over the last few years. Clients enjoy the benefits of personal training in a positive small group atmosphere alongside friends and/or work colleagues. There’s a competitive aspect but also a sense of we’re all in this together and we can do this attitude.

With the pandemic, we missed connecting with our friends and family. Socially distanced workouts outdoors or virtual helped fill that void. And now that things are getting back to normal, we’re craving connection and human interaction. Small group workouts are a great way to catch up and have fun with friends while strengthening your body and mindset.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

- The Porch at Christie's - recently reopened, they offer delicious and healthy pre and post-workout fueling options
- Winfield Street Coffee - keeps me energized for clients and also offers healthy pre and post-workout fuel
- Fleet Feet - I’ve turned almost every client onto ON running shoes sold here
- Gym Source - During the pandemic, all my dedicated clients created some form of the home gym for their virtual workouts, even if it was just dumbbells, kettlebells, and some bands

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

When gyms were forced to shut down in March 2020, I wanted to still deliver workouts to people at home. We all needed them more than ever. I created a private Facebook Group called “Bodyweight Blast” where I hosted a free life at home workout every day for 40 days. Hundreds of people joined and did the workouts with one another.

The dozens of videos are archived in the group and I still receive messages from people who are enjoying the Bodyweight Blast workouts. Being able to give back and connect with others at such a challenging time was so rewarding.
