Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

Meet Matthew Maynard, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist!

Four questions with Matthew Maynard.

Why did you start your business?

I started my private practice to better serve adolescents and teens within Fairfield County. I noticed a substantial amount of parents coming to me to find guidance on helping them establish rules and guidance while maintaining a loving relationship. The struggle to blend those to aspects of parenting is even more challenging when your child may have learning differences or social-emotional challenges.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Because of the challenges, I described above I built an online parenting course as well as a one-on-one coaching system for parents. Now work alongside them to love their children through the process of learning to be emotionally and physically self-sufficient. The model is called emotionally strategic parenting. It allows the entire family to have more harmony and balance. Results parents can expect are:

- zero power struggles or extreme emotional meltdowns
- more time for the family to enjoy each other
- parents working collaboratively and no longer arguing with one another
- kids no longer being reliant or dependent on others to function physically or emotionally.
- empowered and emotionally resilient kids.

The course can be found on my website www.matthewmaynard.com and you can learn more about my parenting coaching program at www.westportctcounseling.com

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Predominantly, I have collaborated with a lot of pediatricians in the area. Bay Street Pediatric Group, Village Pediatric Group, Dr. Elin Cohen's practice in Fairfield to name a few. These practices are incredible to collaborate and work with. They truly care about their patients and want to provide great follow-up care.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

Yes, COVID has drastically changed my business model and outlook on the future. Believe it or not, I was commuting from northern NJ where I live to get to my office in Westport for years. My wife and I welcomed our son to the world during COVID and now I cannot imagine going back in. I'm now 100% remote and have been able to serve more clients, more effectively, virtually. No more sitting in a waiting room, or getting stuck in I-95 traffic for hours just to see me.

We hop on a video call and clients get to talk with me directly wherever they are. I am also in the process of building training for other therapists to be able to utilize my parenting system so we can help more parents feel more confident and successful in their parenting.

Matthew would like to nominate Bay Street Pediatrics to be featured next!
