Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

Four questions with Leslie Giuliani.

Why did you start your business?

As a fine artist, I need a way to show my work when not showing in a gallery setting, especially during Covid. The work in my online shop is small and affordable and available year-round.

What is your best-selling product/service?

I sell my Embroidered Encaustic paintings, Handmade Stencils, and Cashmere Scarves. The scarves are seasonal and the stencils are art-making tools. The paintings are the best sellers. Each one is unique and my process is unusual. I embroider images onto my Encaustic paintings and then embellish the surface further with appliqué, stitching, and sometimes even sequins.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

My paint is made in a small factory in Kingston, NY called R&F Handmade Paints. The paints are handmade by artists. I know all the staff personally.

My beloved embroidery machine came from Yankee Quilter in Seymour, CT. I love that store and return for any service or sewing products I need. As a 35 year Weston resident, I support all of our local shops to keep Weston a vibrant place to live.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

As a fine artist, I have to keep nimble to earn my living. I teach private and group classes out of my Weston studio, I sell art supplies and sell my artwork online in my website shop! I do love it when collectors come to the studio to purchase work in person. I am always delighted when people make appointments to visit. That way, they can see everything I make and learn about the processes.

Leslie would like to nominate Frances Palmer Pottery in Weston to be featured next!
