Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Dustin Malstrom Design Studio!

Three questions with Dustin Malstrom, founder of Dustin Malstrom Design Studio.

Why did you start your business?

Architecture has been at my core since childhood— in both the physical and metaphorical sense. Building ideas and bringing them to life is what I find most exhilarating— simply put, I am a builder!

Drawing parallels between entrepreneurship and architecture wasn’t obvious until my 30’s— a liberating lightbulb moment when life began to make a bit more sense. I’m most comfortable when uncomfortable and thrive when challenged.

I build ideas, brands, buildings, and whatever else I find exciting and inspirational. Our work aims to make a positive impact on humanity and our environment (the power of design).

What is your best-selling product/service?

Prior to covid, the majority of our projects consisted of experience-driven environments (hospitality and marketing activations/ events). Fast forward to 2021, we find ourselves where we started— working mainly on residential architecture projects which have been a pleasant surprise.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

To a certain extent, yes. As mentioned above, the pandemic has decreased some of our business, however, we've seen a boom in our residential work. As a result, we've expanded services beyond architecture and design, to include project management and production.

Based in Westport, Connecticut, we work everywhere with projects in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and Connecticut.

Dustin would like to nominate Norma's Barbershop in Westport to be featured next - "It's a wonderful family-owned business!"
