Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Imke Lohs!

Why did you start your business?

When I moved from NYC to Westport 9 years ago, I had to give up my career as a journalist. But I missed working and specifically meeting new and fascinating people all the time as you do as a journalist. Plus I'm a huge fan of architecture, especially mid-century modern and contemporary design concepts.

Real estate seemed to be the perfect solution for my dilemma and my two passions: Working with people and Architecture. Matching a person or family with the right home and negotiating intelligently for a seller's or buyer's best price is the most rewarding feeling for me.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Westport delivers an unmatched product with its award-winning amenities, beaches, and overall lifestyle. My service is delivering excellent all-around care for my clients, a thorough overall market data knowledge, knowing the local inventory in detail, and carefully listening to my clients and catering to their expectations. My network of professionals around their new homes helps my clients far beyond the closing date.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

I shop locally for my business purposes - shopping flowers at Blossom & Stem or Compo flowers, Paper Source, William & Sonoma, The Beehive, Mitchells, Barnes & Noble, Lux Bond & Green, SoNo Bakery, Tusk, Age of Reason, and all of the local Restaurants for gift certificates.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

During the pandemic, social media became our most important communication tool. For instance, I held the first-ever public open house live on Facebook in Westport for my seller clients - yes, I was horrified! I sold a house via FaceTime. Before the pandemic, videos in real estate were made by professionals, which is expensive. Now, amateurs have taken over! I’m trying to implement more videos with valuable content for clients and social media in my daily work routine.
