Why Small Businesses Matter
Shop small, do big things for your community
Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!
You're IT Peter's Dog Food!
Four questions with Amy Jenner, founder of Peter's Dog Food.
Why did you start your business?
It started as a food rescue project. I was volunteering at a local market during COVID, shopping for customers and helping where I could. I noticed that at the end of the day, they were throwing out meats, chicken, and fish that had reached the end of their shelf life. When I talked to the owner, he told me that the food pantries can’t accept foods like that, so I asked if I could make dog food out of it. It became a going concern when the market closed. A surprise to me is that customers got in contact with me and asked if I would make it for them, and I thought I would give it a try!
What is your best-selling product/service?
By far - it is Beef Bistro. It's beef, white potatoes, yams, butternut squash, broccoli, and hard-cooked eggs. Everyone loves it! (Testimonials from Willis, Lucky, Dugan, Sugar, and Murphy).
I only buy locally. I am not an Amazon person…and I have a great deal of personal pride in what I make. I buy only the best ingredients. I purchase food from Caraluzzi’s (the meat department calls me the "dog food lady") and I purchase my cooking tools from Cook Nook in Wilton.
Have you "reimagined" your small business?
Not yet. I need to figure out how to scale this without compromising my quality.
