The May 18, 2016 Mid-Day Music program features Megan Chartrand, soprano and Daniel Fung, piano: Barber’s “Hermit" songs. The concert starts at 12:05 p.m. and lasts approximately one-half hour. The recital is free but donations are gladly accepted. A light lunch follows for a $5 donation.
Praised for her “light, fleet soprano” and “soaring, diamantine high notes” (Opera News), Canadian Megan Chartrand feels equally at home singing early music, art song, chamber music and concert repertoire. Notable solo performances include Mozart's Requiem with the Santa Fe Desert Chorale; Bach's St. Matthew and St. John Passions at the Staunton Music Festival; Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass with the Keene Chorale; Mozart's Mass in C Minor with the Manchester Symphony Orchestra; Dalila in Handel's Samson with the American Classical Orchestra; Handel's Crudel Tiranno Amor with The Alberta Baroque Ensemble and Weil's Seven Deadly Sins at the Kuhmo Chamber music festival in Finland. Megan sing frequently with many of the most prestigious ensembles in North America including The Clarion Music Society, Seraphic Fire, The American Classical Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy, The Santa Fe Desert Chorale, Yale Choral Artists, Trinity Wall Street, Ensemble Origo, Pro Coro Canada, and Handel + Haydn. She received her MMus from Yale University and her BMus from the University of Alberta.
Increasingly sought-after as a musical partner, pianist Daniel Fung is rapidly establishing himself as one of his generation’s most versatile and active collaborative pianists. He is in demand as a vocal accompanist, coach, chamber musician, and has performed throughout his native Canada, the United States, France, Italy, and Austria. His performances have taken him to prestigious venues including the Winspear Centre, Alice Tully Hall, Peter Jay Sharp Theater, and Carnegie Hall. Mr. Fung is an alumnus of the Music Academy of the West, Tanglewood Music Center, and the Georg Solti Accademia Peretti Répétiteurs Masterclasses in Venice, Italy. He has served as music staff at Opera on the Avalon in St. John’s, Newfoundland and at “Si parla, si canta” in Urbania, Italy. His passion for vocal accompanying has led to his participation in Marilyn Horne’s The Song Continues at Carnegie Hall, and on live-streamed masterclasses from Juilliard with Renée Fleming, Joyce DiDonato, Patricia Racette, and Eric Owens. He was selected for Juilliard’s Vocal Arts Honors Recital with soprano Julia Bullock in 2013 and, unprecedented in the Honors Recital history, partnered both of the winning singers, bass Önay Köse and baritone Emmett O’Hanlon, in 2014. Equally experienced in instrumental repertoire, Daniel Fung recently completed a 5-city tour with clarinetist Wesley Ferreira in 2015 and will present a recital with flutist Stephanie Kwak. Currently, Daniel is a C.V. Starr Doctoral Fellow in Collaborative Piano at The Juilliard School and holds degrees in solo piano performance from the University of Calgary. His teachers have included Margo Garrett, Jonathan Feldman, and Marilyn Engle. A passionate believer in outreach and education, Daniel has worked with the Juilliard Drama Intensive in Ephraim, Utah, “Juilliard in Aiken”, and is a Gluck Community Service Fellow. He also worked in the Juilliard Residence Hall as a Resident Assistant and later as an Assistant Resident Coordinator. Upon the completion of his Master’s Degree in Collaborative Piano, Daniel Fung was a recipient of The Juilliard School’s William Schuman Prize which is presented to a graduate student for outstanding achievement and leadership in music. His studies have been generously funded by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and Alberta Scholarship Programs. In his spare time, Daniel Fung enjoys travelling the world as well as seeking out and preparing new cuisines.
