For its 12th Wilton Reads event, the Wilton Library has selected “Waiting for Snow in Havana: Confessions of a Cuban Boy" by Carlos Eire. All community members are invited to read, discuss, and reflect on the book and its themes.
“Wilton Reads has, for several years, given us an opportunity through fine literature to sharpen our view of ourselves and the world around us,” the Library says on its website. “This stunning memoir is a vibrant and evocative look at Latin America from a child's unforgettable experience as he flees Castro's Cuba.”
Born in Havana in 1950, Eire was one of 14,000 unaccompanied children airlifted out of Cuba in 1962 by Operation Pedro Pan. After living in a series of foster homes, he was reunited with his mother in Chicago in 1965. Eire earned his Ph.D. at Yale University in 1979 and is now the T. Lawrason Riggs Professor of History and Religious Studies at Yale.
Participants can also borrow copies of the book from the library in eBook, eAudiobook, CD, and Spanish editions.
The Wilton Library is located at 137 Old Ridgefield Road in Wilton, Conn. For more information, visit wiltonlibrary.org, or phone (203) 762-3950.
