
The Western Connecticut Youth Orchestra, celebrating its 20th Anniversary Season, will present its 2022 Winter Concert at Clune Auditorium at Wilton High School in Wilton on Sunday, March 6th at 4:00PM. The concert will feature the WCYO String Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra and include a diverse repertoire of classical and contemporary concert music.
The Symphony Orchestra, under the leadership of WCYO Music Director and conductor Eric Mahl, will present African Suite: IV Danse Nègre, by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Prince Igor Overture and Polovtsian Dances by Alexander Borodin, and the first movement of Felix Mendelsshon’s Violin Concerto in E Minor featuring violinist Katherine Mombo of Southbury CT.
Katherine Mombo is the winner of the WCYO 2022 Concerto Competition. She has been a member of the WCYO for three years, and is currently assistant concertmaster of the WCYO Symphony Orchestra. She began playing violin in the fifth grade, performing in the Symphonic Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra at the Waterbury Arts Magnet School. She currently attends Pomperaug High School, where she is concertmaster of both orchestras. Katherine also participated in the Charles Ives Music Festival as a chamber musician for the past three years, in the inaugural CIMF Orchestra in the summer of 2021, the CMEA Southern Region Orchestra for four years and was recently accepted into the CMEA All State Orchestra for 2022. This spring, she is playing in the pit orchestra for the PHS production of ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ She tutors younger students in her school district on the violin and volunteers through the Back to Bach Project. Outside of music, Katherine is an officer on the Pomperaug student council and has been a Girl Scout for seven years. Her violin teacher is Alyce Bertz.
The String Orchestra, conducted by Joanna Giordano, will present a Korean folk song, Ahrinang, arrangement by Soo Han, the first movement of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and A-Flat, by Multiple Artists – Baptiste, Sylvester, Rodrigquez & Diaz of Black Violin.
The Wind Ensemble, conducted by Albert Montecalvo, will perform El Relicario, by Jose Padilla, West Side Story Selections, music by Leonard Bernstein, arr. W. J. Duthoit, and With Each Sunset, by Richard L. Saucedo.
