Tuesday, October 3 Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of Carl Phillips (Zoom), 10:30am to noon. Please join us online as Janet Krauss leads a discussion of a selection of poems by Carl Phillips. Links to the poems will be emailed in advance of the program. No charge for the program. Advance registration required. Register online in order to receive the Zoom session invitation link and readings packet. Please email Michael Bellacosa at mbellacosa@wiltonlibrary.org with any questions. It has been said that Carl Phillips’ vision is “a somber, autumnal landscape, one that is illuminated by  moments of ephemeral, ethereal beauty.”  Ephemeral, yes, but fixed in print as gifts to his readers. Phillips can state an opinion and then follow it with a stunning metaphor to illustrate his abstract comment. He tells, then shows. We will see all all this happen in the poems we will discuss. Carl Phillips, the Pulitzer Prize winner of Poetry for 2023, was born in 1959 in Everett, Washington. He is Professor of English at Washington University in St. Louis where he teaches creative writing. In addition to the Pulitzer, he has won many other awards. In 1990 he accepted his identity as a gay man. He said “he rediscovered his poetic voice.” Janet Krauss, who has two books of poetry published, “Borrowed Scenery,” Yuganta Press, and “Through the Trees of Autumn,” Spartina Press, has recently retired from teaching English at Fairfield University. To register, visit www.wiltonlibrary.org. Wilton Library, 137 Old Ridgefield Road, Wilton; www.wiltonlibrary.org; 203-762-3950.

Tuesdays, October 3 &10 Fall Semester with Mark Schenker: A Survey of Literary Utopias - "The best of all possible worlds?" (Zoom), 7 to 8 p.m. Please join us online via Zoom as Mark Schenker takes us on a guided tour of several literary utopias and dystopias spanning several hundred years. Ever since Sir Thomas More (1478-1535) created the word “utopia” in the early 16th century, the double meaning of his coinage has informed centuries of Utopian literature in English. (The Greek outopia means “no place,” while eutopia means “good place.”) Since More’s Utopia, writers such as Jonathan Swift and Margaret Atwood have created imagined worlds that reveal the dystopian reality behind the utopian dream. After beginning with More’s masterpiece, Mark Schenker will survey other literary works from each of the past six centuries—books that engage the quest for societal perfection, the limits of human aspiration, and the various meanings of the old saying that “the perfect is the enemy of the good.” Here's the schedule and please note that the sessions are not all on the same day of the week and also stretch from September to November: Sept. 7 – Utopia, Sir Thomas More; Sept. 14 - Gulliver’s Travels, Jonathan Swift; Sept. 21 – Erewhon, Samuel Butler; Sept. 28 - The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood; Oct. 3 - King Lear, William Shakespeare; Oct. 10 - Station Eleven, Emily St. John Mandel; Nov. 2 - Cloud Cuckoo Land, Anthony Doerr. These lectures are made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration required. Register online or call 203-762-6334. Although Mark often makes cross-references, the lectures mostly stand alone. However, as a convenience, you will automatically be registered for all seven sessions. Please email Michael Bellacosa at mbellacosa@wiltonlibrary.org with any questions. Mark J. Schenker, having served in various decanal roles in Yale College since 1990, retired at the end of June. A former lecturer in the English Department, he received his Ph.D. from Columbia University with a concentration in 19th-century and early 20th-century English Literature. Thursdays, October 5, 12 & 19 Poetry Seminars with Judson Scruton: Jorie Graham's To 2040, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Please join us for a seminar series in which Judson Scruton takes us through a selection of poems from Jorie Graham's new book To 2040. Because this is a new book, attendees will need to make their own copies of the selected poems but a master packet will be placed at the Reference Desk so that patrons may copy or scan/email the poems fairly easily. Jorie Graham’s observations and reflections on trees, birds, steams, visual art, mythology, and history are captured in intriguing poetic lines that wander across the page sometimes speaking in the “uncanny idioms of artificial intelligence and machines” but with “precise descriptions of what she sees, hears, smells, and touches. The unfolding drama of consciousness is always an indispensable part of the poem.” (Walt Hunter in The Atlantic) To 2040 is Jorie Graham’s latest and 15th collection of poems “shows us multiple potential futures—soundtracked by sirens among the ruins, contemplating the loss of those species who inhabited them and those who named them” (from a blurb on the back of the book).

Come join us for a lively discussion of these remarkable and accessible poems.

September 28: I “Are We” / “On The Last Day” / “To 2040”

October 5: II “Dis—” / “Day” / “Can You”

October 12: III “Time Frame” / “The Vase of Quince Branches You Sent Me” / “Dawn”

October 19: CODA “Then The Rain”

Yet this drive to optimize performance has only resulted in skyrocketing rates of anxiety, depression, and even self-harm in America’s highest achieving schools. In Never Enough, award-winning reporter Jennifer Breheny Wallace investigates the deep roots of toxic achievement culture, and finds out what we must do to fight back. Wallace draws on interviews with families, educators, and today’s leading child psychologists as well as an original survey of nearly 6,000 parents. Through this deep research, Wallace shows what kids need from the adults in the room is not more pressure, but to feel like they matter, and have intrinsic self-worth not contingent upon external achievements. Packed with memorable stories and offering a powerful toolkit for positive change, Never Enough offers an urgent, humane view of the crisis plaguing today’s teens and a practical framework for how to help. Jennifer Wallace is an award-winning journalist and social commentator covering parenting and lifestyle trends. She is a frequent contributor to The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, and appears on television to discuss her articles and other hot topics in the news. After graduating Harvard College, Jennifer began her career in television at "60 Minutes," where she worked as a journalist for many years. She lives in New York City with her husband and their three children. elmstreetbooks.com will be selling copies after the talk.  A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. Tuesday, October 24 Senior Center Book Discussion: The Secrets We Kept: A Novel, 11 a.m. to noon. Please join us as Caroline Mandler leads a discussion of Lara Prescott's The Secrets We Kept. Lara Prescott’s debut novel weaves together a romance and a spy thriller, inspired by a true story. During the Cold War of the 1950s, the CIA hatches a plot to send two woman spies, posing as secretaries from the typing pool, into the Soviet Union to smuggle out the manuscript of Boris Pasternak’s novel Doctor Zhivago. Interwoven with this plotline is the love story of Pasternak and the mistress who went to the Gulag rather than betraying him to Stalin. And, yes, that mistress became the inspiration for the literary heroine Lara of the famous novel and film. Bookpage wrote: “A whirlwind of storytelling. In Prescott’s supremely talented hands, the result is no less than endlessly fascinating, often deliciously fun, as well as heartbreaking. The Secrets We Kept is a dazzling, beguiling debut.” This group meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month from September through May, excluding December. Call the Senior Center for details and to register at 203-834-6240. Comstock Community Center, 180 School Road, Wilton.
