Library Hosts 129th Annual Meeting for Friends

The Wilton Library Association (WLA) proudly hosted its 129th Annual Meeting for Friends on Thursday evening, June 20, 2024. The meeting featured the election of officers, recognition of retiring Board of Trustees members, and awards honoring the Library’s outstanding Volunteer of the Year and Staff Person of the Year. The event culminated in a conversation with esteemed guest Deborah Schander, Connecticut State Librarian.

Carol Johnson, President of the Wilton Library Association, expressed gratitude in her opening remarks, thanking "the Town for its continued support of our library, the Board of Trustees for their guidance and expertise, and especially the Wilton Library Staff for their unwavering commitment and dedication to making our library the cultural and intellectual hub of our community."

Treasurer Mike Boswood highlighted fiscal year 2023-2024 achievements, noting a "strong response" to the Annual Appeal, successful fundraisers such as Casino Night and Spring Escape, and unexpected expenses including a necessary elevator repair, resulting in a slight deficit.

Caroline Mandler, Executive Director, acknowledged the generosity of donors and the crucial support of the Board of Selectmen in expanding programs and collections. She celebrated significant community engagement metrics, including increased visits, digital circulation, and program attendance.

Mandler also highlighted milestones from the past year, including the launch of the Cornerstone Writer-in-Residence program and the international recognition of the digital archive for the Brubeck Collection. She emphasized the Library’s commitment to inclusivity and community collaboration, citing partnerships with various local organizations.

The meeting included the announcement of Sue Stengrim as the Staff Person of the Year for her innovative contributions to the Development department. Betsy Huffman was honored as Volunteer of the Year for her artistic talents and dedication.

New officers for the fiscal year 2024-2025 were elected: Carol Johnson as President, Marty Avallone as Vice President, Betsy Huffman as Secretary, and Penny Maxwell as Treasurer. Continuing trustees and new board members were also nominated and approved.

Retiring trustees Mike Boswood, Thom Healy, and Juliette Leavey were recognized with books donated to the Library’s collection in appreciation of their service.

The evening concluded with a discussion led by Caroline Mandler and guest Deborah Schander on the evolving role of libraries in fostering civic engagement.
