On Saturday evening, more than 800 friends, neighbors and family members gathered at the Clune Center to celebrate the life of jazz innovator and legend Dave Brubeck. The evening began with Iola (Dave’s wife of over 70 years) sharing some wonderful stories, including how they came to settle in Wilton. Bill Brennan then thanked the packed house for attending the celebration, and Gail Lavielle and Toni Bucher read aloud an excerpt from a citation from the State Legislature in recognition of Dave contribution to society. Attendees were treated to music and song from his sons, Dan, Darius and Chris, in addition to other friends and former playing companions. His daughter Catherine recounted fond childhood memories and read aloud a letter from his other son, who could not be in attendance. The celebration culminated with Grammy Award winning saxophonist Paul Winter joining the Brubeck bothers and the choirs of St. Matthews Church, the Wilton Singers and the Wilton High School Madrigal Singers in a power rendition of Take Five, the legendary tune The Dave Brubeck Quartet released in 1959. It was an amazing night to be a Wiltonian, and celebrate a man who changed the music world forever.
