Autumn Poetry - Goethe’s Faust Part II: A World of Fantasy, Fascination, Fortune, and Fate, 10:30 – noon. In this four-week seminar, Dr. Gerald Weiss will be delving into Part Two of Goethe’s Faust, the great masterpiece, entering a world of fantasy, fascination, fortune, and fate. In this part, Faust continues to strive after the highest possible existence and 'the eternal feminine' with the aid of Mephisto (the devil). His search for the meaning of life is the reader’s search, too and the universal search for what it means to be human and the purpose of life itself. Dr. Gerald Weiss earned both a B.A and an M.A. in Classical Languages from St. Louis University.  He pursued graduate studies in Philosophy and Theology at Innsbruck University (Austria) and later at the Gregorian University (Rome, Italy) where he received his Ph.D. While writing his dissertation he taught for a year at the Rome Center of Loyola University of Chicago. Author Talk: Robert McWilliams – The Kiss of Sweet Scottish Rain, 7 – 8:30 p.m. Robert McWilliams, Scottish by birth but now a US citizen and a Wiltonian, takes readers on his ambitious trek across Scotland with his debut book, The Kiss of Sweet Scottish Rain: A Walk from Cape Wrath to the Solway Firth. The walk was an obstinate ambition and the start of a new direction in life. McWilliams was born in Glasgow, Scotland and graduated from Wadham College, Oxford.  He joined Reuters news agency in London and spent 16 years at Reuters as a business manager in Hong Kong, Japan, the US, Venezuela and Brazil. Now in Connecticut more than 20 years, has contributed the “Taking a Hike” column to local newspapers every month for the past five years. He has written for A.T. Journeys, CTVisit.com, and volunteers for other outdoor causes such as the Norwalk River Trail. See the library’s registration link for more details. Daryl Hawk: Distant Journeys Photography Exhibition Reception, 6 – 7:30 p.m. “Daryl Hawk: Distant Journeys,” is a 30-year retrospective of color images from around the world by the explorer and international documentary photographer. Fifty of Hawk’s favorite images from North, Central and South America, Cuba, Patagonia, the Arctic, Antarctica, India, Ladakh, Bhutan, New Zealand will be on display. AARP Driver Safety Class, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation's first and largest classroom driver safety course designed especially for drivers age 50 and older. This single session, four-hour course covers the normal changes in vision, hearing and reaction time associated with ageing and provides practical techniques on how to adjust to these changes, along with learning to operate vehicles more safely in today's increasingly challenging driving environment. Norwalk Symphony Orchestra—(Not) Just for Kids: Time Pieces – Strings, 3 – 3:45 p.m. The Norwalk Symphony Orchestra (Not) Just For Kids program is a lively, fun and interactive program designed to be educational as well as entertaining. Members of the orchestra demonstrate their instruments, play for the children, and answer questions in hour long presentations. Senior Center Book Discussion: The Poets Laureate Anthology, 11 – noon. Judson Scruton leads a discussion of a selection of poems from The Poets Laureate Anthology edited by Elizabeth Hun Schmidt. The Poets Laureate Anthology brings together a sampling of the works of the 43 ‘poets laureate’ of the United States from the inception of the position in 1937 until the book’s publication in 2010. Collected and edited by the former poetry editor of The New York Times Book Review, the volume includes brief introductions to each of the poets as well as an inviting foreword by poet Billy Collins who held the position from 2001 to 2003. In its review, Booklist said that “the nearly 500 poems map a great republic of the imagination.” For this year’s discussion, we will be reading ‘A Pasture Poem’ and ‘A Measuring Worm’ by Richard Wilbur and ‘Awaking’ and ‘An Elementary School Class Room in a Slum’ by Stephen Spender.
