Wilton Library Celebrates 5th Annual Innovation Day Oct. 19

The constant hum of the Hovercraft accompanied by squeals of delight emanating from the Brubeck Room are a sure indication that Wilton Library’s fifth annual Innovation Day on Saturday, October 19, from 1 to 5 p.m. will be a crowd-pleaser. This annual event is a thrill ride for anyone who loves to Discover, Dabble or Do-It-Yourself in this festival of making, creating and demonstrating. This is a free event for all ages with certain activities carrying a nominal fee to offset costs.

Susan Lauricella, Teen Services and Makerspace Manager remarked about Innovation Day, “This is such a fun event where people can spend a few minutes or hours touring around the library and experiencing new and different arts, crafts, and technologies that they might otherwise not be that familiar with. It’s particularly fun to hear about some of these technologies and then to come to the library to see them up close and personal.”

On the technology front, people can test out virtual reality with fun tours only they can imagine, have a green screen photo taken with a background they get to choose, watch 3-D printing, learn kids’ coding, meet members from Wilton Library’s award-winning Robotics Team, and of course, ride the Hovercraft.

Guests are invited to learn the basics in calligraphy and Zentangle Art, make button pins, big paper flowers, and thumbprint magnets, experiment with LED bowties and flower pins, personalize luggage tags, create gift cards, try their hands at Emoji cookie decorating, and paint pumpkins donated by Wilton Kiwanis Club.

Attendees will get to chat with a silkscreen artist and meet a quilter who makes her own dyes. Participants will be able to get original Henna designs and spray-on tattoos. There also will be tables of fun activities for children and adults to enjoy including coloring, duct tape creations, jewelry making and slime.

Melissa Baker, Media and Digital Service Manager and a familiar face to those who use the library’s very busy Innovation Station, “It’s a free-wheeling day in which kids, teens, families, and adults can come in and check out so many new things. We love to see people get inspired by what they can make – they learn skills they didn’t even know they had! And for the kid in everyone, we have large scale Connect Four and Jenga games.”

Carolyn Benjamin, Technical Services Manager and Innovation Station guru noted, “Delicious drinks and scrumptious baked goods can be purchased at the Bubble & Brew truck parked in the library’s parking lot during the event. And people can relax with the pups from ROAR and Mutt-i-grees.”

The library’s Innovation Day is sponsored by Wilton Hardware and Ring’s End. The media sponsor is GOOD Morning Wilton.
