Saturday, Feb. 1 Norwalk Symphony Orchestra (Not) Just for Kids: Broadway Bound - Mixed Soloists, 3 – 4 p.m. The Norwalk Symphony Orchestra (Not) Just For Kids program is a lively, fun and interactive program designed to be educational as well as entertaining. Members of the orchestra demonstrate their instruments, play for the children, and answer questions in hour-long presentations. Throughout the season, presentations are made for all instrument families: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. All programs end with attendees having a chance to hold and try to play a beginning level instrument in the 'Petting Zoo'. Ages 4 and up with caregivers. If so, come learn how to use our new high-resolution slide scanner. It can scan up to 50 slides in one batch. For 7th graders through adult or 6th graders accompanied by an adult willing to learn too. Must have a valid CT Library card and signed Innovation Station Agreement Form. If so, come learn how to convert them to DVDs. For 7th graders through adults and 6th grade students accompanied by adults who are willing to learn too. Please bring the completed form to the workshop. $1 fee for the DVR-R.  This is for home videos only and conversion time is one-to-one. Equipment cannot accommodate 8mm tapes. Mondays, Feb. 3 through March 30 Rockin' Rhythms, 11:15 – 11:45 a.m. Rockin' Rhythms is Ray’s way (of Jay and Ray) of continuing to develop and give children a unique and awesome experience with music during their preschool years. Music helps children develop and excel in so many ways, not only academically but also socially and behaviorally as well. We also want parents, grandparents, and caregivers to enjoy this experience as much as the children will. We will be using various musical instruments, percussion, ukuleles, and guitars, to sing and interact with various repertoire from traditional, popular and original music. Ages 2 - 5 with caregivers. Occupational therapists Melissa Chaikin Kahn and Kate Baylis will lead an interactive workshop on the importance of a well-functioning sensory system in helping children function in their daily activities and in their “work” of being a child. Attendees will learn specific strategies that can be implemented immediately and incorporated directly into the home environment. Friday, Feb. 7 The Art of Firing Circuits Studios Exhibition & Reception, 6 – 7:30 p.m. Ten area artists will be showcased in Wilton Library’s art exhibition, “The Art of Firing Circuits Studios.” The artists are all from the Firing Circuits Studios in Norwalk and include Cecilia Fradet, Mari Gyorgyey, Lydia Larson, Emily Hamilton Laux, Cate Leach, Claudia Mengel, Valerie Rovens, Mark Schiff, Brian Walker, and Nancy C. Sunday, Feb. 9 WLA/WHS Scholarly Series: Jazzed Up—The History of Jazz in America – Chris Coulter at Wilton Library, 4 – 5:30 p.m. In the 13th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society, the scholarly lecture series focuses on the theme of “Jazzed Up: The History of Jazz in America.” In this lecture, Chris Coulter will explore Louis Armstrong’s early life and his important early recordings that laid the groundwork for his remarkable career as one of the country’s most influential musicians. Thursday, Feb. 20 The Treaties of Sèvres and Lausanne - Case Studies of Diplomatic Nonsense, 7 – 8:30 p.m. This is the final lecture in the series about World War I and its aftermath presented by Wilton Resident Jean-Pierre Lavielle. Ninety-nine years ago a treaty was signed in Sèvres, a Paris suburb, to reshape the Middle East from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. The plan collapsed, yet it casts a very long shadow since it explains the current explosive situation of the Middle East. See the library’s website for details. Jean-Pierre studied philosophy and law in France at the University of Bordeaux with further legal studies at New York University’s Law School. He moved from Paris to Wilton with his wife Gail in 2002.Registration is recommended.
