Tuesday, March 2 Wilton Reads - Memorial Drive Book Giveaway 10 – 11 a.m. and 5 – 6 p.m. Memorial Drive: A Daughter's Memoir by Natasha Trethewey is our Wilton Reads 2021 pick.  In anticipation of Trethewey's talk, and to insure a wide readership, free copies of the book will be distributed, thanks to Fairfield County Bank.  Complimentary copy may be picked up at the Drive-Thru Window on Tuesday, March 2 from 10-11:00 or from 5-6:00 while supplies last. Tuesdays, March 2 through April 20 Virtual Chess Club – Intermediate, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Kids in kindergarten through high school are invited to join this virtual chess class.  Each week students will learn new strategies and then pair up using Chess.com to practice playing. Wednesday, March 3 Zentangle Art Workshop: Zooming with Amy, 3 – 4:30 p.m. Join Amy, Wilton Library's certified Zentangle instructor, for a fun and relaxing live online Zentangle art session.  This meditative art form uses simple steps to teach practitioners how to create beautiful patterns. Wednesdays, March 3 through April 7 Celebrating Diversity, 3:30 – 4 p.m. Children ages 4 through 7 are invited to join in this story time in support of Wilton Reads 2021. Each Wednesday from March 3 through April 7, we will share picture books that represent a variety of cultural backgrounds. Kids will have a chance to explore these "window" books, where they can learn about someone else's life that may be different from their own. Children will hear the stories, have a discussion, and do an activity. Participants will receive a free copy of one of the books. Registration is required as space is limited. There is no fee. Wednesdays, March 3, 10, 17 & 31 Of Violence and Valor: Four Lectures on The Iliad, 5 – 6 p.m. Yale's Mark Schenker returns to Wilton Library with a 4-part virtual lecture series on Homer’s epic poem, The Iliad. He will concentrate on the poem as a literary work of art, and will consider also how it contrasts and harmonizes with The Odyssey as a masterpiece that engages both the destructive force of rage and the enduring power of civilization. Thursday, March 4 Is the ACT or SAT Best for Me?, 5 – 6 p.m. Starting to think about college entrance exams, but not sure whether to take the SAT or ACT… or if you even need to take one at all? Join us to learn about the purpose and the differences between the two. Test prep advisor and college counselor, Priyanka Shingala of Let’s Talk College, LLC, will discuss each exam, what are good scores, optional essays, and much more. The session will be run by. Presenter Donna Merrill’s work in environmental conservation spans more than two decades.  A Wilton resident for 36 years, she’s served as Executive Director of the Wilton Land Conservation Trust and a Wilton Conservation Commissioner. Friday, March 5 Zooming Child-Adult Zentangle Fun in Color, 3:30 – 5 p.m. Calling all artists and doodlers. If you love to draw or doodle but think you aren’t a good artist, this is the program for you. Using a few simple steps and techniques, anyone can learn to create beautiful artwork in a relaxing atmosphere. So join us and share some time with your favorite grownup. We will be doing different beginner tangles and this class will work equally well for first-timers and those who have a bit more experience, and attendees will be working in color. For children entering grades 3 – 6 with a participating adult. Registration is required. Thursday, March 11 WLA/WHS Scholarly Series: Connecticut Creativity: Vision + Imagination + Inspiration - Lynn Caponera and Dr. Jonathan Weinberg, 5 – 6:30 p.m. In the 14th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society, this 5-part scholarly lecture series held virtually focuses on the theme of “Connecticut Creativity.” In this presentation, “The World of Maurice Sendak: A Virtual Tour of the Maurice Sendak House and Studio,” Lynn Caponera and Dr. Jonathan Weinberg discuss the world of the famous illustrator, author, and Ridgefield resident, Maurice Sendak. Caponera and Weinberg take the audience virtually into the Sendak world, discuss the Sendak creative process, and his Ridgefield, CT home and studio where he lived and worked for forty years. The recipient of numerous coveted awards, Maurice Sendak remains the most honored and beloved children’s book author in history. Lynn Caponera, Executive Director and President of the Board of The Maurice Sendak Foundation, had a 40-year history with the celebrated artist Maurice Sendak. Jonathan Weinberg, Ph.D., Curator of The Maurice Sendak Foundation, is an artist and art historian. The moderator is Max Gabrielson. The program is sponsored by Allison and Rob Sanders. Saturday, March 20 2021 March Madness Library Chess Tournament, 1 – 5 p.m. Several Connecticut libraries will battle over the chessboard on 3/20/2021! Up to 10 libraries will all compete with a championship as their objective. Students from these libraries have been practicing relentlessly with professional chess coaches. The matches will be played through Chess.com. The winner of this tournament will receive a chess trophy so that it can be displayed in their library. Thursday, March 25 WLA/WHS Scholarly Series: Connecticut Creativity: Vision + Imagination + Inspiration - Kathleen Maher, 5 – 6:30 p.m. In the 14th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society, this 5-part scholarly lecture series held virtually focuses on the theme of “Connecticut Creativity.” In this lecture, “The Greatest Showman – Fiction vs Fact! The REAL Story Behind the REEL Story,” Kathleen Maher will captivate guests with an engaging journey through key elements in the P.T. Barnum movie. Maher will expand on the tales set in the screenplay and reveal the truth to the remarkable stories of struggle and triumph that are even more fantastic. Friday, March 26 Spring Fairy Workshop, 4 – 5 p.m. Kids entering grades K – 5 are invited to join a Zoom craft session to make a Spring Fairy Doll.
