Monday, May 3 through Saturday, May 8 Children's Book Week: Take and Make Bookmark It's Children's Book Week! The theme this year is: Reading is a Superpower. Kids ages 3 and up are invited to pick-up a craft kit to make at home. Kits will be available at the drive-thru window M-F 10 – 6, Saturday 10 – 5) or parents can make an appointment to visit the Children's Library (Monday through Saturday, 11 to 5) to pick them up by calling 203-762-6336. Tuesdays, May 4 through June 22 Virtual Intermediate Chess Club, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Kids in kindergarten through high school are invited to join this virtual chess class. Each week students will learn new strategies and then pair up using Chess.com to practice playing. Classes are taught by instructors from DIG Chess USA. In this educational workshop, attendees will learn how taxes can change the outcome of their retirement. Current tax law, potential changes to tax law and strategies will be discussed. Veteran financial advisor Michael Alimo (Investment Advisor Representative, ChFEBC) have been devoted to serving clientele in CT and the New England region for 18 years at his USA Financial & Tax Services, LLC. Thursday, May 20 The College Timeline: What To Do When, 5 – 6 p.m. When should you begin touring colleges? How many AP exams should you take? How do you start researching schools? What about SATs and ACTs? These are just a few of the questions high school students have as they start to think about college. Friday, May 21 CT Poetry Society Workshop –Online Zoom Meeting, 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Please join us online for the next CT Poetry Society workshop using Zoom. Saturday, May 22 through July 10 Silver Club Virtual Book Club, 3 – 4 p.m. Join the Silver Club to learn new topics, read new books, make new friends, and to just have a good time! As a part of a Girl Scouts Silver Award, this book club will be run by four current 8th grade students: Kendra W, Sydney F, Lena O, and Grace H. This eight session course will meet once a week over Zoom and is offered for anyone in grades 5-7th. A variety of books will be offered and will be chosen every two weeks via a vote by our members. No materials will be needed for the first week but in later weeks a copy (either online or a hardcopy) of the chosen book will be needed. Members will be added to a Google classroom where information, extra activities, and more will be available. Registration required. Tuesday, May 25 Harvard Case Project Discussion: Martin Luther King Jr. and the Struggle for Black Voting Rights, 5 – 6:30 p.m. Participants will read in advance an actual Case Study written by award-winning Harvard Professor Dr. David Moss, author of the book Democracy: A Case Study. They will take part in an engaging discussion that will have them consider the struggle for voting rights over the course of U.S. History and evaluate strategies. Wednesday, May 26 More Zooming Child-Adult Zentangle Fun in Color, 3:30 – 5 p.m. Calling all artists and doodlers. If you love to draw or doodle but think you aren’t a good artist, this is the program for you. Using a few simple steps and techniques, anyone can learn to create beautiful artwork in a relaxing atmosphere. So join us and share some time with your favorite grownup. We will be doing different beginner tangles and this class will work equally well for first-timers and those who have a bit more experience, and attendees will be working in color. For children entering grades 3 – 6 with a participating adult. Registration is required. Please register all attendees. Thursday, May 27 Author Talk: Caseen Gaines - Footnotes: The Black Artists Who Rewrote the Rules of the Great White Way, 7 – 8 p.m. Footnotes is the triumphant story of the all-Black Broadway musical that changed the world forever. Author and pop culture expert Caseen Gaines leads readers through the glitz and glamour of New York City during the Roaring Twenties to reveal the revolutionary impact one show had on generations of Americans, and how its legacy continues to resonate today. Footnotes is the story of how Sissle and Blake, along with comedians Flournoy Miller and Aubrey Lyles, overcame poverty, racism, and violence to harness the energy of the Harlem Renaissance and produce a runaway Broadway hit that launched the careers of many of the twentieth century’s most beloved Black performers.
