Please join us in the Brubeck Room for a 4-week literature seminar led by Judson Scruton, who will take us through selected works by poets Robert Hayden and Mona Van Duyn.  Robert Hayden was a major black poet who was often denigrated by the literary establishment because he wrote in more traditional, classical poetic forms.  Mona Van Duyn won all the major poetic prizes but was often dismissed as writing about suburban female subject matter.  Both poets deserve far more recognition and study. Their poems are accessible yet filled with surprising insight. Advance registration is required. There is no charge for this program. By registering for the first session you will automatically be registered for all four sessions. This lecture series is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley.  Please email Andrea Sato with any questions at asato@wiltonlibrary.org. Tuesday, Nov. 9 Drinking, Smoking, Vaping: Trends in Teen Use and What Parents Can Do, 10 – 11:30 a.m. Join the Wilton Community in the Brubeck Room for this positive event supporting the well-being of our adolescents. What exactly is "normal" when it comes to adolescent "experimentation" with alcohol, vaping and other risky behaviors? Parents may not be aware that affluence is a risk factor for teens' exposure to and use of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and liquid nicotine (vaping) and that many high achieving teens are secretly engaged in these behaviors. In this workshop, Elizabeth Driscoll Jorgensen, CADC, Director of Insight Counseling, will help parents understand the current trends in teen behaviors as well as the possible unique risk factors for these behaviors that parents can minimize or eliminate. Parents will also learn simple and effective ways to set and maintain reasonable limits and expectations for their child's safety and social life. Parents will have ample time to ask questions about their specific concerns. This program will also address the unique risk factors and considerations for prevention of substance use for teens with learning disabilities and other special needs. We will cover teens with ADHD and other disabilities that may pose significant challenges to parents setting and maintaining safety boundaries and helping teens navigate social life. No charge for the program. Co-sponsored by Wilton Library, Wilton Youth Council and SPED*NET Wilton. This program is appropriate for parents of 6th-12th grade students.  All interested adults are welcome to attend. Registration required. Register online or call 203-762-6334. Wednesday, Nov. 10 Inflation, Taxes and the Effect on Your Retirement, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Please join us for an educational workshop that may help you in these volatile times. Veteran financial advisor Michael Alimo from USA Financial and Tax Services returns to Wilton Library to discuss how inflation and taxes may affect your retirement. Given the low level of inflation, is it still an issue for retirement savers and those using their savings to finance retirement expenses? Due to the low inflationary & interest rate environment, investors have found it next to impossible to receive an acceptable rate of return to keep pace with inflation in traditional CD’s & Money Market accounts. This erodes the “purchasing value” of your money for everyday needs. The question for retirement savers is how to mitigate the impact of inflation. The answer lies in creating a diversified portfolio that includes equity investments. Taxes have been a concern for many Americans for decades now. With rising deficits on the federal, state and municipality level, where does that leave the taxpayer? As they head towards retirement most Americans have squirreled away a fair amount of assets “tax-deferred”.  What are these assets truly worth when needed? Currently tax law changes are being discussed and changes may be coming. Get prepared. Advance registration required.
