Thursday, September 1 Hot & Cool Jazz: Chris Brubeck's Triple Play, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Please join us on Thursday night September 1 for our first Hot & Cool Jazz concert since January 2020 featuring Triple Play, a trio of three outstanding and versatile musicians: Peter Madcat Ruth (on harmonica, guitar, jaw harp, percussion & vocals), Joel Brown (folk and classical acoustic guitar and vocals), and Chris Brubeck (electric bass, bass trombone, piano & vocals). Collectively they bring a rare level of joy, virtuosity, and American spirit to the folk, blues, jazz and classical music they perform. Wednesday, September 7 Gazebo Story Time at the Farmer's Market, 2 to 2:30 p.m. Join us at the farmer's market for a fun family story time inside the gazebo. Children ages 2 and up and their caregivers will enjoy stories, rhymes, and songs. Fun for the whole family! No registration required. Wednesday, September 7 Author Talk: Revelation: A Memoir of Deep Family Secrets, Discovery, and Identity by Richard Gary Kaye and Annette Schwarz Kaye, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wiltonian Richard (Rick) Gary Kaye’s intimate memoir is a riveting story about a devastating family secret his parents perpetuated for over 60 years. At a Jewish fundraiser, advertised as a fun “DNA Reveal Dinner,” Rick and his sister Randye, were shocked to discover they are, in fact, half-siblings. Within 48 hours, they learned the man they called Dad was not biologically related to either of them. Revelation takes the reader on Rick’s emotional roller coaster as he wrestles with deception, secrets, and lifelong memories now seen through a new lens. A burning need for the truth about his paternal medical history and ancestry sets off a yearlong quest to uncover the facts. He and his wife Annette became obsessive detectives to painstakingly unravel the mystery of Rick’s conception and find the identity of his biological father. Did Rick’s mother have an affair, was she raped, or was there another explanation? Those questions were just the start. With only the tiniest of clues but great perseverance, puzzle pieces began to connect, gradually revealing a secretive world of anonymous sperm donation in the 1950s. Follow Rick and Annette on this fascinating journey and see how they ultimately solved the mystery that affected over 30 families and changed their lives forever. Rick’s story was reported in the Wall Street Journal and he was interviewed with Randye in an NPR Podcast “Think Before You Spit: The Pandora’s Box of DNA Testing.” Rick Kaye and Annette Schwarz Kaye, originally from Queens, New York, are longtime residents of Wilton, CT where they raised their sons, Josh and Adam. Both attended Wilton Public Schools from kindergarten to graduation from Wilton High School. Friday, September 9 The Art of Firing Circuits Studios Exhibition & Reception, 6 to 7:30 p.m. “The Art of Firing Circuits Studios” will be showcased in Wilton Library’s September art exhibition. Firing Circuits Studios is a collective of diverse, well-known working artists with studios located in a brick century-old factory in Norwalk. Their work represents a wide variety of styles, media, and subject matter. Reception free and open to the public. Exhibition runs through October 1. Saturday, September 10 Tales to Tails, 11 a.m. to noon. Children who can read independently are invited to read to a ROAR (Ridgefield Operation Animal Rescue) Therapy Dog. The use of trained therapy dogs in reading programs can result in children who feel comfortable reading out loud, read more often, attempt more difficult books, and actually look forward to reading. Tuesday, September 13 Teen Library Council, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The Wilton Teen Library Council (TLC) is a monthly group for youth in grades 6-12 who are interested in becoming more involved with the library. All Wilton teens are welcome. Benefits include: helping librarians choose teen materials, brainstorming ideas for teen programs, gaining experience working in a leadership role, and helping the community through service projects. Each meeting will consist of a small group activity and discussion of upcoming events. We will meet the second Tuesday of each month and ask that you attend all meetings. Tuesday, September 13 East Meets West: From Japonism to Impressionism, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Join us in the Brubeck Room for a look at the influence of Japanese art and culture on French and American Impressionism, presented by ArtScapades. This lecture begins with a look at two of Japan’s master printmakers, Hokusai and Hiroshige, and will then move on to discuss their influence on well-known names of the Impressionist movement including Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, William Merritt Chase and Childe Hassam. Robin Hoffman and Jodi Stiffelman, of ArtScapades, began teaching art appreciation in 1998. They have presented at libraries and museums in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and Florida. Jerry Bergonzi is a tenor saxophonist, composer, author and educator who toured with the Two Generations of Brubeck band and also held the sax chair in the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Tuesday, September 27 Senior Center Book Discussion: The Poets Laureate Anthology, 11 a.m. to noon. Please join us as Judson Scruton leads a discussion of a selection of poems from The Poets Laureate Anthology edited by Elizabeth Hun Schmidt. For this season’s discussion, we will be reading: "Before the Flood," "Rain Light" and "Forgotten Fountain" by W.S. Merwin; "In the Child’s Night" and "The Heaven of Animals" by James Dickey; and, "Manhole Covers" and “A Drawerful of Eyeglasses” by Karl Shapiro. The Poets Laureate Anthology brings together a sampling of the works of the 43 "poets laureate" of the United States from the inception of the position in 1937 until the book’s publication in 2010. Collected and edited by Elizabeth Hun Schmidt, the former poetry editor of The New York Times Book Review, the volume includes brief introductions to each of the poets as well as an inviting foreword by poet Billy Collins who held the position from 2001 to 2003. In its review, Booklist said that "the nearly 500 poems map a great republic of the imagination." This group meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month from September through May, excluding December.
